The Status Quo, Politics Take Hits
Daniella Walsh
Review of 'Diverse City' at Santa Ana College Main Art Gallery, Santa Ana, CA
excerpt October 2, 2005

The show not only emphasizes the current trend toward representational and personal art, but also, judging by the meticulously crafted paintings of Moira Hahn and Nancy Romero, the multimedia imagery of Daniel du-Plessis, and the painted ceramics of Karen Koblitz, a renewed emphasis on technical virtuosity...Hahn reverses stereotypical cultural trends by using themes of classical Japanese art as a starting point for her tongue-in-cheek take-offs on the sometimes quirky melding of East and West. She transposes Edvard Munch's "The Scream" into a portrait of a geisha in the midst of an emotional meltdown, and creates a raucous dinner party of cats dressed in samurai regalia ("Nine Lives II") that brings to mind depictions of bacchanalian suppers found throughout Western art.'
